Hours of Operation- Open Daily from 7:00 a.m. Located at 11 Arizona Memorial Drive Honolulu, If you are visiting the USS Missouri Karen and I highly recommend that you stop by and visit the USS Bowfin. The USS Bowfin is a very interesting museum in Hawaii for any person who is interested in military technology, but you do not have to be interested in that to have a good learning experience and greater appreciation for those brave souls that were in World War II. Another thing that I found interesting was that they had a Poseidon missile which emphasizes all the working parts of a missile from the propulsion elements to the electronics. submarines which was interesting because each crew got to individually design their flag. The museum also houses the McCann Rescue Chamber which is the chamber used in the only successful rescue of men from a sunken American submarine. The memorial lists each submarine that was lost and the names of their crew members. A waterfront memorial is also there which is dedicated to the 52 submarines and over 3,500 officers and crewmen who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country during World War II. The submarine is not the only thing to see there. Speaking of being claustrophobic Karen has a slight case, but she had no problems making it through the submarine. I am not very claustrophobic, but there is no way I would make it through a military tour on a submarine. Then imagine yourself about 400 feet below the surface of the ocean during a war time setting, it is just amazing how they were able do it. It was really neat to walk through the submarine and try to put yourself in a hero’s shoes for just a second, and see just how confining the space would have been. You will get to see everything except the lower decks which contain the battery and main motor rooms but you will see everything else from the sleeping quarters to where the torpedoes are loaded to be fired. The audio tour has two different parts for each marker, one for adults and the other geared towards children. Upon taking the tour of the submarine you will be given an audio device that narrates your tour. It really gives a greater appreciation for all those brave men that served on submarines during World War II and a greater admiration for all service men and women who have risked their lives over the history of the United States allowing us the freedom that we, who live in the U.S., enjoy. I still cannot get over the fact that 80 men would be on patrol for months at a time in such a tiny little space. It was pretty remarkable to walk through an actual military submarine. It has been moored at Pearl Harbor on the Island of Oahu since the late 70’s and was turned into a museum. The USS Bowfin was launched on December 7th 1942 and decommissioned on December 1 st 1971. Named the Bowfin for the predatory fish that lives in the Great Lakes region, it lived up to that name as well as its nickname, the Pearl Harbor Avenger, when it sank forty-four enemy ships during the war. The USS Bowfin Submarine Museums is the home of the USS Bowfin a Balao-class submarine that saw action during World War II and the Korean War. ![]()
